Inspired by Waterhouse's "Circe Invidiosa" and Madeline Miller's novel about the famous witch of Aeaea. Made of smoky quartz, lodalite (garden quartz), rainbow obsidian, chrysoprase and stunning abalone accent beads, it features a lovely pewter snake clasp from Green Girl Studios, a nod to the water serpent Circe stands upon in the painting. Unlike Waterhouse's rendering of her though, I envision Circe less as a jealous woman and more as Miller envisions her: as someone determined to navigate the murky waters of existence with as much, grace, humanity, verve, and self-possession as one ever can. Miller's Circe is as deeply and achingly human and vulnerable as she is powerful—a character I found myself wishing I could befriend as I read her story. And let's be honest, I'd wager a fair number of us would, in these times, love nothing more than to spend at least a few days napping with Circe's docile lions on a hidden Mediterranean island—hence the abalone, a little memory of the beautiful sea.
